Wexford County is located towards Michigan state’s center of the Lower Peninsula. Wexford County has a land area of 565.00 square miles and a water area of 10.46 square miles. The county is ranked 46th in population for the state of Michigan. The landscape ranges from hillsides to relatively flat regions. A moraine ridge bisects the county from northeast to southwest, with glacial outwash plain covering the majority of the remaining land.
Soils associated with higher elevation ridges are mostly well-drained sandy soils with moderate fertility, but outwash plain soils vary from well-drained sands to areas of poorly drained peat and muck. The Manistee River watershed has a huge effect on the northern portion of the county. Made up of high-banks and a well-drained sandy loam outwash plain where a number of tributaries flow. There’s about 112,000 acres of both state and federal land; totaling a third of the county’s land. These large tracts of public land are prominantly filled with aspen, red and white pine, lowland conifer, and some northern hardwood, all of which provide good deer habitat.
Private land is mainly composed of pockets of farm land surrounded by wooded habitat. Following Antler Point Restrictions in 2014 and an increase in antlerless permits shortly after, the deer population in Wexford County looks to remain steady. Whitetail deer, grouse, bear, ducks, turkey, and geese are among the game species available for hunting along the farm land, vacant land, waterfront, and hunting land for sale by Michigan Whitetail Properties in Wexford County, Michigan.
