The majority of the soils in the region are well-drained and are made up of sand, sandy loams, or sand/gravel, with the occasional addition of organic soils or clay, mainly around rivers and streams. These drier sandy soils support a variety of pine, oak, aspen, and red maple species. The terrain is made up of substantial tracts of both state and federal land. Crawford County is traversed by the Au Sable River, the Manistee River, Beaver Creek, and other tributary waterways. The bulk of the county land is owned by the state, with federal land in the southeast portion. These vast tracts of land are blanketed by forest and provide ideal deer habitat.
The private land is mostly wooded habitat with excellent soils. There are a TON of hunting opportunities within Crawford County. The local economy is heavily reliant on hunting and other forms of outdoor activity. Recent population trends show that the deer population is gradually increasing. This is expected to be mainly due to a series of mild winters since 2013, as well as a slow but continuous decrease in hunters and hunting effort. Whitetail deer, grouse, bear, ducks, turkey, and geese are among the game species available for hunting along the farm land, vacant land, waterfront, and hunting land for sale by Michigan Whitetail Properties in Otsego County, Michigan.
