Get StartedMonroe County is in the state of Michigan’s southeast region. Monroe County has a land area of 549.39 square miles and a water area of 130.62 square miles. The county was named after President James Monroe (1758-1831), the fifth President of the United States. There are many miles of shoreline on Lake Erie in Monroe County which are important for commercial navigation and recreation. Monroe County has relatively flat terrain and soils that are typically well-suited to row crop cultivation. Because agriculture predominates on privately held land, the landscape is significantly fragmented. Aside from public properties that are largely wetland, deer habitat (e.g., woodlots, shrub/brush, and wetland) is isolated and only occurs in tiny patches.
