Lapeer County is in the state of Michigan’s southeast region. Lapeer County has a land area of 643.01 square miles and a water area of 19.83 square miles. The county is ranked 23rd in poulation of Michigan. The terrain varies from moderately rolling to somewhat mountainous in certain spots. There are several inland lakes in this county, including Barnes Lake, Lake Nepessing, Big Fish Lake, and even the Holloway Reservoir. Approximately half of the private land in this county is still used for agriculture. Corn, soybeans, hay, along with orchards and tree nurseries are among the crops grown.
Much of the area is also forested, with less than 4% urban, providing excellent deer habitat, food, and cover. Approximately 40% of the county is suited for deer hunting. The deer population in Lapeer County has consistently risen over the previous 10 years. The key factors include a scarcity of public hunting land, a decline in the number of hunters over the previous decade, and the tradition of deer hunters traveling “north” to hunt. There also appears to have been a movement in the recent 5 years toward harvesting fewer antlerless deer, since the data shows a considerably sharper fall in antlerless harvest compared to buck harvest.
